Twin, Full, Queen, or King: When the Bed is too Short and the Blanket too Narrow

As we pull back the sheets of Isaiah we discover two distinct pillows: one is significantly harder than the other. We find the pillow of judgement and beside it the pillow of comfort and hope.

I can get pretty dreamy eyed about universal peace as I read through the imagery in just one verse of Isaiah, Chapter 11, where “the wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them (vs. 6).”

In my lifetime, I’ve experienced some very restless nights and I wonder will I ever wake up from this nightmare. These dreams are reminders for me to stay on the right side of bed or get back on it if I’ve drifted away from God. “The bed is too short to stretch out on, the blanket too narrow to wrap around you (Isa. 28:20).” A few nights of this kind of restlessness causes exhaustion and anxiety in me and I’m more than ready for a peaceful night of sleep. Oh, and might I add shamefully, I’ve been responsible for pulling the covers off my husband a few times as well.

I specifically remember one night visiting our son living in Indiana at the time. The bed was large enough but the covers were not. He and his buddy were conserving energy dollars and had the thermostat turned down somewhere between 50-60 degrees.  This was in the middle of an Indiana winter – the kind of weather you can throw a cup of warm freshly separated cream in the air and make homemade ice cream without the salt. I was so cold, my mind wouldn’t let my body relax enough to sleep – one of those times I felt my nose and it was even cold. Can you relate . . . just can’t get comfortable? I remember dropping hints to please turn up the heat and wasn’t surprised when their pipes froze. That will teach you!

All this to say, we are faced with choices each day. Choosing the way of obedience isn’t always comfortable for sure, but I would rather be covered with the garments of God’s salvation knowing one day the peace described in Chapter 11 will no longer be a dream but my reality!

Sweet dreams in whatever size bed you find yourself sleeping in. You may be in a twin size bed that is a bit too short, but you can still put on “King” size covers that will keep your heart warm – the protection of God’s grace.
